Connie Carter is a business lawyer, educator and communicator who also consults on international trade, foreign investment, marketing, technology transfer and intellectual property law mainly in China, India and South East Asia.  She is currently Professor of Law and International Business in the faculty of Management at Royal Roads University in Victoria, British Columbia.

Connie Carter spent 20-odd years working with marketing communications, branding, corporate culture, industrial design and training in industry in Europe before returning to the University of London, UK, to gain a PhD in law. Since then she has acquired real-life experience straddling the global business and academic worlds: at times, holding senior management positions in industry (most recently as Director, HR and Administration, at a China-based, German-owned manufacturer of forklift trucks); at other times she has combined full-time university teaching in international trade, marketing, business and IP Law (e.g. at Xiamen University, China), with integrated multi-disciplinary business consulting in Europe, China and SE Asia.

Connie Carter has a sound theoretical foundation in law and economic development (her PhD research) but has also lectured and published practical tips about doing business in China, India and SE Asia. She has been a guest professor of intellectual property law and international trade at several universities in Asia and Europe.

Her recent publications include: "The Clonability of the Singapore Model of Law and Development: The Case of Suzhou, China" (in Antons: Law and Development Asia, Curzon, 2003); Eyes on the Prize: Law and Economic Development in Singapore (London, Kluwer Law, 2002); and "Fighting Fakes in China: The Legal Protection of Trademarks and Brands" (in the PRC, London, Intellectual Property Institute).

Connie Carter's current research interests include: Corporate governance and social responsibility in Special Economic Zones; Corporate Culture and Branding: What can the East learn from the West?; and What can Special Economic Zones in India learn from China?
