Phillip Dearden has a B.A. (Birm), M.Sc. (Mem, Nfld), and received his Ph.D. (UVic) Geography in 1978. His research interests include resource management; conservation, particularly protected area designation and biodiversity management; coastal planning, marine parks and ecotourism.

His current projects are focused on marine protected area conservation and enhancing local livelihoods in Thailand and ecotourism and national parks in Sri Lanka. He currently teaches GEOG 367 Geography of Southeast Asia, and GEOG 468 Advanced Seminar on Environmental Management in Southeast Asia at the University of Victoria.

His recent publications include: "Dive specialization in Phuket: Implications for reef conservation" (Dearden, P, Bennett, M., & Rollins, R., Environmental Conservation. 33(4): 353-363, 2006); "Fisher's needs in marine protected area zoning" (Lunn, K.E., and Dearden, P., Coastal Management, 34 (2), 183-198, 2006); and "Detecting a decline in whale shark (Rhincodon typus) sightings in the Andaman Sea, Thailand, using ecotourist operator-collected data" (Theberge, M., and Dearden, P., Oryx, 40, 337-342, 2006).
