Joanna Wong, a UVic alumni, worked as the Program Officer for the Foundation for Child Development in Bangkok, Thailand. She was a participant of CAPI's 2003-04 Internship Program funded by the Centre.
Joanna has since received two scholarships to study Chinese language
and culture at East China Normal University and the Beijing Language
and Culture University. In China, she has worked for Kham Aid, an NGO focused on poverty alleviation in rural Sichuan province, the 2008 British Columbia Canada Pavilion in Beijing. and as the China Communications Manager for Future Generations, an international NGO focused on community-based environmental protection.
Joanna described her CAPI placement in the following way:
"Working at the Foundation allowed me to observe an NGO “in action” - that is, doing hands-on community programs that affected children’s lives in very tangible ways. During my internship, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to engage in a very wide range of activities, from building playgrounds to filming documentaries to writing communications materials...and I will carry the experience with me in what I hope will be a lifelong commitment to social justice and human rights in the Asia-Pacific region."
Listen to an interview with Joanna, by CAPI intern Alumni, Raya Yampolsky, about her internship experience and how it opened the doors to additional opportunities.
