Chinese Uncertainties and Canadian Responses: After the Global Financial Crisis

The purpose of the conference on Chinese Uncertainties and Canadian Responses: After the Global Financial Crisis is to make a contribution to the debate in Canada on what our policy towards China should be.  The recent visit of the Minister of International Trade to China, combined with the reopening of six consulates, suggests that the Canadian government is open to taking a new look at its China policy. In considering its options, the government should take into account the effect of the global financial crisis on Chinese realities, including the economy, internal stability, foreign interests, and policies adopted in light of these circumstances.

The conference will be held under the auspices of the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Centre for Global Studies of the University of Victoria. It will take place on November 21 and 22, 2009 at the University. It will be attended by academics, officials, and other stakeholders, including those from private industry. While the conference will be closed to the public, the chair's summary and the papers presented will be placed on the websites of the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives and the Centre for Global Studies.
