  • Reflections on an Indian Variant of Liberalism

    In this Lunch and Learn event, Dr. Rinku Lamba will consider certain prominent objections to the possibility of conceiving of an Indian variant of liberalism and offer responses to them.

    Dr. Lamba is a Political Theorist at the Centre for Political Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and visiting fellow at UVic's Centre for Studies in Religion and Society.

    Having recently returned from consulting in Mongolia, Global Collaboration director and CAPI Associate, Ivan G. Somlai, provides a frank overview of the realities of large extractive industries and their interactions with government and communities. Aspects touched on include ownership, environment, governance, ethnic and social tensions -aspects which find resonance across the globe in similar contexts.

  • Histories and Competitive Societies: Temporal Foundations for Global Theory

    The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives held it’s annual Albert Hung Chao Hong lecture on August 2, 2012 at UVic. Dr. Prasenjit Duara, Raffles Professor of Humanities at the National University of Singapore, discussed his theories on national histories and storytelling to an interested audience in his lecture, “Histories and Competitive Societies: Temporal Foundations for Global Theory.”

    CAPI is delighted to have hosted a rare cultural performance from Japan at UVic. The troupe, Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo, has been classified as an Intangible Folk Cultural Properties by the Government of Japan.

  • Progress in Technology: Educational and Social Changes

    This symposium consists of three presentations looking at using traditional tools and new media technology in learning environments and associated socio-cultural changes.  Presenters looked at how natural disasters and technological progress are shaping our educational scenario. Presenters along with the audience reflected and evaluated the functions of social media in building more enduring community by reconnecting with others who share their concerns.
