CAPI invites applications for three Faculty Research Development Grants to support research activities focused on the Asia-Pacific region.
Purpose:
The Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives is committed to supporting study and understanding of the Asia-Pacific region at the University of Victoria. CAPI's Faculty Research Development Grant program is one mechanism for providing this support. The grants offer faculty a source of funding for research activities focused on the Asia-Pacific region.
Eligibility:
All persons with academic appointments confirmed by the Board of Governors are eligible to apply for Faculty Research Development Grants.
Terms:
The maximum grant is $5,000.
Grants are awarded to support work in the following areas:
- Research leading to the development of university courses;
- Research that leads to the development of larger grant applications;
- Research that results in scholarly publications.
Activities typically funded include: hiring research assistants, research-focused travel, and duplication and translation costs. Grants do not fund conference participation or living costs for lecture tours to the region since other university funds are available for such purposes.
CAPI Grant recipients are eligible to apply for new or successor grants 24 months after being awarded a grant, provided the work of the earlier grant has been satisfactorily completed, with required reports submitted to CAPI and accounts for earlier grants finalized.
Applicants should indicate whether the proposal, or a substantial part of it, has been the subject of a funding application to any other funding body at the University of Victoria within the past two academic years, and if so, the result of the application.
Deadlines and Application Procedures:
The deadline for the submission of proposals is February 28th, 2011.
Completed application forms, with supporting documentation and the names of three referees, should be submitted to the attention of the CAPI Associate Director, Helen Lansdowne. Proposals should describe the project's research objectives and methodology, its theoretical and practical importance, its relationship to existing research and literature; sources of research/activity materials; as well as work already completed or in progress. Proposals should include a research/activity plan with a realistic timetable and a budget. If research assistants are to be employed, their duties and expected qualifications should be described. Applicants should append teaching or research C.V.s, as relevant.
Payment of Grants and Reporting Requirements:
10% of the total grant is withheld until a brief research report and a full accounting of funds has been received by CAPI.
Recipients of awards are reimbursed upon receipt of account statements and supporting receipts. Airline boarding passes and invoices are required for reimbursement of air travel.
Recipients of awards are required to submit a grant proposal, a scholarly article or book, or a working paper (to be published under CAPI's logo) within one year of receiving the grant.
Recipients are requested to acknowledge CAPI's assistance in all publications resulting from CAPI-supported projects.
Conditions of Award:
CAPI Faculty Research Grants may be used only for the purposes specified in the notice of award. Requests for any budgetary changes must be submitted in advance to CAPI's Director for approval. Refusal to secure approval in advance may result in some expenditures being ineligible for reimbursement.
A grant may be used to support only the project for which it was awarded. Should there be any substantive changes in the project, the original grant must be returned to CAPI and a new application submitted for consideration.
It is expected that grants will be used within the time period specified in the original application. Extensions of the grant period will be considered only in unusual circumstances. Any funds that remain unexpended and unaccounted for at the end of the granting period and/or at the end of the project, will revert back to CAPI.
All equipment, microfilm, video and library materials purchased with a CAPI grant will be considered the property of the University. On termination of the project, such purchases should be placed in the University Library and the CAPI Director notified of their disposition.
